Blueberry is a comic book series created in 1963 by Jean-Michel Charlier as writer and Jean Giraud as artist, before Giraud continued the adventure alone after the death of his partner in 1989. It was Jigé who introduced Giraud to Charlier, who was looking for an artist for his new project.
Two spin-off series were created: The Youth of Blueberry and Marshal Blueberry, with a total of 55 albums.
The series narrates the adventures of Mike S. Blueberry, a Union officer during the Civil War, stationed at Fort Navajo afterward. He experiences the Indian Wars, the construction of the transcontinental railroad, a false accusation of treason, life as an outlaw, and as a poker player (in Tombstone), taking us with him on a journey through a country being born, shaping its legend and history.
Far ahead of its time, Blueberry features a true anti-hero: free-spirited, able to choose his side but always ready to help those in need. The modernity of Gir’s artwork, transitioning him from a follower of Jigé to an inspiration for the next generation, combined with the richness of Charlier’s storytelling, makes Blueberry one of the landmark series of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
