Created by Alain Ayroles (story) and Jean-Luc Masbou (art and colors), "De Cape et de Crocs" revisits adventure literature, particularly that of pirates and musketeers, through the peregrinations of two valiant gentlemen united by a beautiful friendship: Don Lope de Villalobos y Sangrin and Armand Raynal de Maupertuis, a Spanish wolf and a French fox, on a quest for treasure.
On their journey, they will encounter their fellow companions, notably Eusèbe, an adorable little rabbit who is both naïve and cunning, the Raïs Kader, Hermine and Séléné (the "lovers" of the two heroes), as well as a German scientist named Bombastus.
The series is filled with numerous literary, cinematic, and popular references at its core. Between tributes and nods, parody and anachronisms (the heroes will even venture to the moon), the series is funny, fast-paced, and visually consistent.
It consists of 12 volumes. The first 10 volumes follow the adventures of Don Lope and Armand, while the last two volumes delve into the life of Eusèbe before his encounter with his new companions and can therefore be considered as prequels.
Jean-Luc MASBOU is a French comic book writer and artist.
He attended the École Supérieure de l'Image d'Angoulême (like De Crécy, Murawiec, Bertail, or Clérisse), where Masbou acquired a diverse skill set that is reflected in his work.
The quintessence of his work is undoubtedly De Cape et de Crocs, a comic book series that combines adventure, literary classicism, tributes, subtle references to cinema, and theatrical allusions. The collaboration between Masbou (artist and colorist) and Alain Ayroles (writer) works wonders in this series, which has become a classic over the course of its albums.
