Starwatcher
Published in 1986 by Aedena Editions (founded by Moebius, whose name refers to the Garden of Eden), Starwatcher is a revised edition of The Memory of the Future, originally published in 1983.
The 1980s marked the period when Jean Giraud, the creator of Blueberry, evolved from a style filled with tension in every image to a mature and peaceful body of work dominated by silence and contemplation.
In this respect, The Memory of the Future represents a key milestone in the artist's career. Moebius no longer concerns himself with a traditional narrative; instead, he creates an art book in which the illustrations follow one another without any real narrative connection, united only by an overarching visual reflection and a common artistic theme. The accompanying texts are closer to meditative reflections than explanatory commentaries. Moebius does not seek to explain; he simply allows the reader to experience the inner dialogue that naturally unfolds while turning the pages.
Having just completed Time Masters, The Airtight Garage and Arzach, Moebius was about to give birth to The World of Edena. This transition is embodied in The Memory of the Future, whose paradoxical title evokes impressions becoming memories from an immemorial past.
In 1986, Starwatcher was far more than a simple reprint: pages were redesigned, new illustrations were added, and a new title reflected the artist's personal evolution. Starwatcher, both hero and alter ego of Moebius, is an observer. He no longer travels; he contemplates, becoming aware of the beauty surrounding him, guided by his inner thoughts that reshape his universe and redefine the way he perceives the world.
Starwatcher is a manifesto that no longer explores a story, but rather themes, emotions and a deeply personal visual universe that together form a work of art in its own right.
