When Batem took over the Marsupilami in 1987 (endorsed by Franquin, the creator of the little creature), he made the original line his own but energized, in his own way, the antics of the little yellow creature with black spots. Marsupilami
The Marsupilami is a comic strip series created in 1952 by André Franquin and published in the Belgian youth newspaper "Spirou". In 1987, the Marsupilami had its own series, with a script by Yann and drawings by Nicolas Loup. Since then, many writers and illustrators have participated in the creation of the series, such as Batem and Jidéhem. It is published by Marsu Productions. It features an imaginary animal with the behavior of a marsupial like the kangaroo and the habit of making nests in trees like gorillas. The Marsupilami is also amphibious like marine mammals and has a coat similar to that of a feline. Finally, it has exceptional intelligence compared to that of great apes. The Marsupilami lives in the jungle of Palombia, South America, and is very endearing and very popular with readers. The series follows the adventures of this colorful character and his friends, Spirou and Fantasio, as they explore the jungle and encounter many colorful characters. BATEM
Batem, whose real name is Luc Collin, is a Belgian comic book artist, born in Congo (then Belgian).
Trained, first, during his high school studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Châtelet, then at the Saint-Luc Institute of Liège (which saw most of the Belgian cartoonists pass through its walls), he then landed at the SEPP, an audiovisual studio that manages the adaptations and merchandising of the main large comic book series, after being rejected by Dupuis.
In 1987, Franquin who had to develop albums specifically dedicated to Marsupilami, called him. His work on the Marsu derivatives did not go unnoticed! Quickly, Batem became the main cartoonist of the little creature, even more so after Franquin's death, ten years later. He will perfectly integrate into Franquin's world but also develop the Palombie (the imaginary country from which the creature with the long tail comes) in a very creative way.
Besides this monument of BD, Batem is interested in motorcycles (Jack Sélère and Sam Speed) and creates many political cartoons for the Belgian press.
Having first been able to blend into the footsteps of a giant before finding his own expression, Batem has become one of the most sought-after illustrators of his generation.
