The Blacksad comic book series by Juanjo Guarnido is a must-read in graphic literature. It follows the adventures of John Blacksad, a black anthropomorphic cat and private detective, in a world where all the characters are anthropomorphic animals. In the series, Blacksad is involved in mysterious affairs and puzzles to solve while navigating a world with complex racial and social relations. He is accompanied by secondary characters such as journalist Eva Cortés and gangster Al Catt. The series was first published in 1999 and has been a huge success with critics and readers. It has been translated into many languages and adapted into several films and video games. Guarnido's style is immediately recognizable due to his detailed drawings and rich colors, which bring life to the world of Blacksad. His panels are often filled with references to pop culture and history, adding an extra dimension to the story.
Juan José (Juanjo) GUARNIDO is Spanish. He graduated from Fine Arts in Granada, where he was born and raised.
He immediately turns to the comic book. The Spanish fanzines specialized in American Comics covers, will be its first space of expression.
In 1993, he joined the French Studios of Walt Disney Animation, in the Paris region. Initially a designer, he ended up in animation. He worked on Le Bossu de Notre-Dame, Hercules and Tarzan.
In parallel, with Juan Diaz Canales, met in 1990 at the Lapiz Azul Animation Studio in Madrid, he works on what will be the first volume of John Blacksad’s adventures : Somewhere Within the Shadows.
The success of this first opus immediately propels Guarnido among the leaders of contemporary comics.
Five other albums of the most famous detective cats will follow, always with the same passion and the same sense of detail.
Guarnido also produced, designed and directed a video for the Swedish metal band Freak Kitchen in 2014.
