Jean-Pierre GIBRAT is a French cartoonist and screenwriter.
Born in Paris, he grew up in a family in the Paris region where political commitment (left-wing and trade unionist) made sense; which would be found years later in his work, as for example for Matteo.
After his baccalaureate (literary, he is passionate about history), he studied graphic design (for advertising), plastic art and it is finally the comic book that will hold his attention ! He published his first plates in Pilote in 1977, and it was with Jackie Berroyer that he began the series Goudard in 1978 in Charlie Mensuel. Then the two accomplices create La Parisienne and decide, by mutual agreement, to combine the two series in Goudard and La Parisienne.
At the same time, Gibrat drew for the weekly press (Le Nouvel Obs, L'événement du Jeudi) and even for Télé Poche where he published the adventures of Zaza, the dog of Dany Saval and Michel Drucker in L'Empire sous la mer.
In 1997, in response to his passion for history, he published Le Sursis, which he wrote, drew and painted. There will then be a volume 2, before he embarks on the series Matteo, character of fiction, socialist, which crosses, over the volumes, the beginning of the 20th century from the Russian Revolution to the Spanish War, through The Popular Front.
Gibrat, whose realistic line is compatible with an obvious mastery of colour and a rare sense of narrative. His heroines (Jeanne, Cécile or Juliette) are particularly remarkable, in the sense that their psychological portraits are fine and fit perfectly in the times in which he places them!
