Mathieu LAUFFRAY is a French illustrator, cartoonist and concept artist. Passionate about drawing at a young age, he became a very good specialist in American comic books of the golden age (50s, 60s and 70s), which allowed him to acquire an impressive visual culture. After his baccalaureate, he joined the Arts Deco in Paris. His study project (a comic book) will be published by Delcourt: The Shadow Oath.
Devoted to illustration, he joined Olivier Vatine Dark House Comics who published adaptations of Star Wars in comics. Lauffray will design for them the covers of these editions for 3 years (about thirty covers in all). He also works for a time on graphic designs for video games but finds the activity too ephemeral in its cultural impact.
In 2009, he began the Prophet series (first with Xavier Dorison in the script and then alone). Still with Dorison, he embarked on the comic adaptation of a sequel to the novel Treasure Island, entitled Long John Silver. Both artistically and at the narrative level, the series of 4 volumes, is very quickly acclaimed. The graphic talent, the depth of Lauffray’s atmospheres make it a very coherent work by rediscovering the spirit of adventure and piracy so dear to Stevenson.
At the same time, in parallel to his work as a cartoonist, Lauffray collaborates on many film projects (not all of which have been successful), many alongside Christopher Gans (co-creator of Starfix) on The Wolf Pact, but also with Pascal Laugier for Saint Ane and The Secret, or Roland Emmerich for 10,000.
In 2017, he signed the second volume of the Valerian series, seen by... at Dargaud: Shingouzlooz Inc..
